The Brief

For this project, I was commissioned by Goodwood to create a series of illustrations for the Festival of Speed, specifically focusing on an exclusive members’ area designed to offer VIP access to the event. This space was strategically located near the track, close to high-end shopping, food, entertainment, and the chance to view exclusive cars. The brief required me to illustrate the entire space, including the tents, cars, food, seating, and overall atmosphere, emphasising the sense of exclusivity and luxury for those who gained access through a membership.

The Process

The process was highly detailed and involved multiple rounds of amendments and refinements to ensure the illustrations conveyed the right balance of elegance and luxury. Given the high price of access to this area, it was crucial to visually communicate its exclusivity and appeal. One of the illustrations also featured an aerial view of the entire event, incorporating the exclusive members’ area into the event map, which added an extra level of detail and complexity. I had to pay close attention to ensure that every aspect of the illustration was as perfect as possible to align with the premium nature of the offering.

The Result

Ultimately, the result was a beautiful set of illustrations that perfectly captured the exclusive and luxurious vibe of the members’ area at the Festival of Speed. These illustrations were used to market and sell event tickets and memberships, and I believe they played a significant role in showcasing the event as a must-attend, upscale experience, helping to generate interest and drive sales.

The Reflection

Reflecting on the project, I’m really pleased with the final outcome. The illustrations perfectly capture the essence of summer luxury—garden parties, champagne, and cocktails—while still fitting within the established style of Goodwood’s branding with its signature scratchy line work. The soft pastel green tones add a subtle nod to the brand, and the overall effect exudes a sense of relaxed sophistication. If I were to revisit the project, I would focus more on the smaller details, particularly the facial features of the figures and the finer elements of the bar and cocktails. I feel these details could have enhanced the opulence and richness of the scene.
