The Brief

For my final film in my master’s degree, I was tasked with creating a project that encapsulated the skills I had developed throughout the course. For me, this meant producing a hybrid 2D/3D animated film that showcased my abilities in visual design, texturing, lighting, and post-production. I chose to tell a deeply personal story, one that reflected my father’s life journey, from overcoming childhood difficulties to finding a sense of home with his family. The brief pushed me to create a narrative that would resonate emotionally, not just visually, to allow my skills in storytelling to shine through.

The Process

The process began with the concept and storyboarding, based on a poem I had written about my father. I divided the poem into individual lines, each representing a scene in the film. From there, I developed distinct visual styles for each part of the story, which evolved into a detailed animatic. The visuals themselves were high-density, multi-layered illustrations, designed to allow 3D characters to be layered within them seamlessly. The 3D character, inspired by imagery of my father, was modelled, textured, and curated to match the rich, personal world I was creating.

The Result

The final film, “Home,” is a highly emotional and visually striking piece. The integration of 2D and 3D techniques created a rich, layered world that complements the narrative’s deep emotional core. The film feels deeply personal, reflecting my own journey and the universal themes of longing and belonging. While the film is not without its imperfections, especially in the sound and music areas, I’m extremely proud of the result. It feels like a true representation of my skills and my personal story, and it has been recognised at festivals, such as Stuttgart International Film festival and Edinburgh Film festival which was an honour.

The Reflection

If I could approach this film differently, I would have taken more time to refine certain aspects, particularly the voice recording and music. Given the emotional weight of the story, these elements could have added more depth. Despite these areas for improvement, I’m proud of the final product. As a project that I produced entirely on my own, it stands as a testament to my abilities, growth, and personal connection to the work. “Home” is a piece I will always cherish, and it’s a fitting conclusion to my time in the master’s programme.
