Hound Lodge Animation

The Brief

The Hound Lodge at Goodwood is an exclusive stay area within the Goodwood Estate, offering a luxurious experience for its guests. The client required unique, bespoke illustrations and animations that captured the spirit of the Duke’s Victorian-era illustrations, particularly of hounds and the Duke himself. These would be featured prominently on the new website for Hound Lodge as part of a larger UX redesign, where the illustrations would help bring a classic, yet refined, atmosphere to the site. The challenge was to bring these historical illustrations to life digitally while maintaining their timeless charm.

The Process

To begin with, I researched the Duke’s original illustrations and diaries to understand the visual language of the time. I then translated these hand-drawn, sketchy line work drawings of hounds and the Duke into vector form, staying as true to the original style as possible. I used these vectors to animate the characters—whether that was the hounds wagging their tails, bowing, or moving their heads—to give them life on the website. The animations were designed to be subtle and sophisticated, fitting seamlessly within the digital experience. In addition to the illustrations and animations, I worked on redesigning the web page’s UX to ensure that these assets were incorporated cohesively and added to the overall elegance and charm of the site.

The Result

I’m particularly proud of how these animations turned out. They blend traditional illustrations with modern digital techniques, bringing the history of the Duke to life in a way that feels fresh and engaging. One thing I might have done differently is incorporating even more interactivity with the illustrations, such as user-triggered animations, to deepen the engagement. But overall, I’m really pleased with how these assets contribute to the overall aesthetic of the website and enhance the Hound Lodge’s luxurious, refined image.

The Reflection

The animations and illustrations used to feature prominently on the Hound Lodge website, where they bring a sense of history and luxury to the digital space. The subtle movements of the hounds and Duke enrich the user experience, creating a connection to the past while maintaining a modern, interactive design. The redesign of the website, with these elements integrated, has elevated the brand and helped communicate the exclusivity of the Hound Lodge experience.
